This site provided a unique challenge in that a stream ran through the front yard, requiring construction access through the neighbors’ yard and extra water infiltration prevention. Located in the Fry’s Spring neighborhood, we decided to use a more traditional farmhouse design, with gabled roof and wide front porch. Inside, we wanted to have wood wall cladding as we often do, but chose a knotty pine to give a rustic warm feel. At the same time, we kept an open floor plan and built a unique entertainment, study, storage box in the center of the first floor to separate the kitchen and dining space from the living room. The current owners have added some raised beds, rain barrels, composting bins and hope to slowly landscape the stream over time.
